Although no one was injured, there was no smoke detector in the RV. This could have been tragic. It is always important to have a smoke detector where ever you are staying; however, it is especially important in an RV. There is little time to react in an RV Fire.

You should always have multiple working fire extinguishers in several locations in the RV. If it is anything more than a very small fire, you should get out immediately. A fire in an RV can spread quickly. Also, always have a fire escape plan in place for each section of the RV. If you travel with children you should show them all possible exits in the RV in case of fire.

RVs are a great way to enjoy summer time travel and are convenient to use. However, they need to be maintained just like a house to keep everything running smoothly. Make sure you head off any expensive repairs by performing a little routine maintenance.

You can easily keep your RV looking great and running well by instituting a few maintenance tasks after each trip. This will really payoff in the long run. Maintaining your RV can be daunting, since it is like maintaining your house and car all at the same time but it is worth it.

Engine maintenance is one of the most important things you can do for your rv. It can be quite expensive to be stranded on the side of the road in the middle of nowhere. Always go by the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance plan. Also, regularly check tire pressure during trips.

Your rv can really add up on miles very quickly. You may want to put off some tasks like oil changes; however, deferring these things may harm the engine and really cost you in the long run. Always check the engine fluids and top off as needed.

The interior of the rv needs attention too. Moisture can really cause many problems on the inside of the home. Make sure to always use the vent fans when cooking or showering. Moisture buildup can cause damage and mold and mildew problems.

You can increase the moisture removal by shutting everything else and leaving one window or door open. This will help draw the airflow up into the roof vent. Also, instead of boiling water on the stove top, you can use the microwave. It’s faster and will contain the moisture.

The drains in your rv need to be periodically cleaned just like your regular home. You can pour a half cup of baking soda and a half cup of table salt along with a cup of vinegar into the drains of the rv. Let that sit for about 15 minutes and then pour a quart of boiling water down the drain to rinse. Do this once a month and you shouldn’t have any problems and you don’t have to deal with harsh chemicals.

If you store your rv for winter, do not forget to winterize the water lines by draining. Make sure there is no standing water in sink traps. Also, drain the hot water heater and disconnect any small lines like the ice maker.

Also, invest in a good cover for your rv. Sitting through a winter can really take its toll on an exposed rv. Ice, snow, and wind can damage an rv exterior very easily. Additionally, it is smart to unhook the battery and unplug your appliances to be on the safe side.
